The Revamped Manual of Monsters: Bullywugs
Bullywugs are one of several “monstrous” humanoids whose interesting characteristics are undermined by the game presenting them as uniformly evil, filthy, and other such things that make them acceptable cannon fodder for low-level adventurers. Giving them alignment variety helps to solve most of the problems with their portrayal, as there is indeed a lot that can be done with frog-like humanoids who believe themselves to be the rulers of “the swamp” and behave accordingly. Evil bullywugs may act similarly to how their original lore describes them, but neutral bullywugs may simply impose a toll on travelers for safe passage through their own swamplands, and good bullywugs may even be willing to provide an escort service to travelers in exchange for finery or inviting them to a rustic feast. The one thing that is more or less constant regardless of the bullywugs’ alignment is that they absolutely do not tolerate disrespect. They are the rulers of the swamp, and they will quickly turn sour towards anyone who does not even stop to learn this fundamental truth, or treat them as anything less than the nobles that they are.
Fortunately, not much needs to be done to their statistics beyond codifying this alignment variation and bumping up their mental stats a bit, as demonstrated below.
